Below are five recommended apps for the solo traveler, ranging from where to dine, stay, and even what to do on your trip.
Where to Eat:
If you’re not the type to strike up a conversation with complete strangers to ask about their favorite restaurants nearby, there’s an app that will help you find great eats in unfamiliar cities. Zomato (previously called UrbanSpoon) shares reviews, menus, types of cuisine and even nearby restaurants with a built-in locator.
Where to Sleep:
While planning a solo trip, whether domestic or international, we usually book hotels in advance. However, sometimes plans change and a place to stay last minute is needed. Pull up the HotelTonight app to view last minute deals on a range of hotels from ‘basic’ to ‘luxe’ from the same day you’re looking to stay to seven days out from using the app.
In addition to the traditional hotel route, solo travelers can use Airbnb to find apartments and rooms for rent in more than 30,000 cities around the world. The app lets you search by location and then use filters such as price and amenities that includes everything from WiFi and air conditioning to pools and whether the rental is pet friendly.
What to Do:
If you’re in the US, we recommend checking out the Localeur app that provides fun and interesting advice on what to do in cities across the country directly from locals, encouraging users to “experience local wherever you go”. Authors share insider tips on the mobile app, compiling suggestions on things to see, places to eat and what to do while you’re visiting one of the now 20 cities it covers.
International travelers will benefit from using the TripAdvisor app for researching the best attractions in each location from trusted reviewers that often share photos as well. The app has also most recently shifted to be one stop shop travel guide app, which now includes travel guides, tour booking and more.
