The Victorian Lounge
Know for its grandeur and romantic setting, the hotel's Victorian Lounge is the epitome of age-old elegance and Southern hospitality. With the charm of functioning antique fireplaces, an exquisite mahogany bar and classic fifteen-foot ceilings, the Victorian Lounge features examples of Queen Anne design, such as the paneled mahogany (imported from Honduras) ceiling, and the frescoed frieze inspired by Greek antiquities.
The Columns was built in 1883 by famed New Orleans architect Thomas Sully and is the only remaining example of a large group of Italianate houses that he designed in the late 1880s. The surviving interior features are considered among the grandest known in any late-nineteenth century Louisiana residence.
The Columns was originally commissioned to be a private home by Simon Hermsheim, owner of Hernsheim Brothers & Co., the largest manufacturer of cigars in the United States at the turn of the 20th century. After Mr. Hernsheim's death in 1989, the house had several owners before transforming into a hotel.
In 1980, the current owners, Claire and Jacques Creppel, purchased the property with the mission to restore The Columns to its original grandeur, and offer a special lodging experience in the heart of New Orleans’ beautiful Garden District.
The Columns Hotel offers guests a southern breakfast every morning, Sunday jazz brunch, and daily happy hour from 5-7pm.
