What You Need to Know About the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program

It’s never fun to worry about safety when traveling, especially on a solo trip. Being fully prepared is a must, which is why I recommend enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program through the U.S. Department of State.

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service that allows U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad to enroll with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate that can help  you in case of an emergency.

Benefits of enrolling in STEP include:

  • Receive the latest safety and security information for your destination country, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans.

  • Help the U.S. Embassy contact you in an emergency, whether natural disaster, civil unrest, or family emergency.

  • Help family and friends get in touch with you in an emergency.

Frequent travelers can create an account to always stay informed, stay safe, and stay connected while traveling. Even if you’re staying at home, the program will provide travel alerts and warnings domestically as well.
